Norwesians will continue to vote without choices.

This will be the scenario again for the 2023 university-wide student elections after only one political party has filed their candidacy.

The Students Electoral Board (SEB) released on Wednesday, May 3, the official list of candidates for both Institutional Supreme Student Council (ISSC) and Collegiate Student Council (CSC) upcoming 2023 elections.

Based on the list, ISSC and CSC elections could end up to “winner by default” decision again, as only the PULSO party filed COCs. The same situation happened in the last 2022 elections.

For the past years, two main political parties have dominated the university-wide electionโ€”the Progressive Union and Leaders in Service to Others (PULSO) and the United Students Working for the Advancement in Governance (USWAG).

SEB Chairperson Angiela Refamonte said that student elections, which is scheduled on May 16, will proceed to officially elect and proclaim the candidates who have filed their candidacy as stated in the election by-laws.

โ€œThe manner of election is face to face and the Computer Laboratory is the final area. Then the request for online tally for public viewing, or everytime na nagi-increase an vote san candidate igpo-post naton iton sa page from time to time,โ€ Refamonte highlighted.

In an orientation for the candidates held Thursday morning, May 4, Student Body Organization Head Maria Lourdes Mae Billate emphasized that candidates must reap votes of at least 50% +1 from the total voting population.

For ISSC candidates, they need to have at least 50% +1 of the total university students while for CSC candidates 50% +1 of their respective collegiate population.

In an interview by The Courier, PULSO’s presidential bet Pears Bob R. Picorro said that this is an indication that Norwesians are happy with the current administration that is why no one tries to oppose their candidacy.

โ€œIt is already two years in a row na waray komuntra sa amon and I am optimistic about it. I took it as a sign na bangin our current administration is doing well. That’s why bangin wara na-feel san iba nga kumontraโ€ฆ I saw leaders right now as great leaders man gud,โ€ said Picorro.

โ€œSiring pa ngani sana aton parents kay naman magbiling pa iba kun mayda na present na mas effective and sobok san panahon,” he added.

Meanwhile, incumbent ISSC President Rafael Tarrayo has filed his candidacy for vice presidency.
