Cooler air settles over PH

Philippines is experiencing a noticeable drop in temperature during the first month of 2026, with cooler conditions affecting several parts of the country, according to recent weather updates.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) attributed the decline in temperature to the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as Hanging Amihan, which continues to bring cold and dry air across the country. While the Philippines does not commonly experience prolonged cold spells without rainfall, such conditions are not unusual during the Amihan season.

Northeast monsoon is a seasonal wind system originating from Siberian and Chinese regions, typically affecting the country from November to February. Its movement results in lower temperatures, particularly in Luzon and some parts of the Visayas.

As of this period, cities such as Baguio and Metro Manila are experiencing cooler-than-usual conditions. Baguio City’s temperature ranges from approximately 11°C to 21°C, while Metro Manila records temperatures between 20°C and 28°C.

In Calbayog City temperatures may play at around 29° to 23°C for the rest of January, according to PAGASA. There’s also a possibility of light to heavy rainfall due to the shear line affecting the Eastern Visayas Region.

With the continuing cooler conditions, the Department of Health recently reminded the public to take precautionary measures as diseases like the common cold and flu are usually common during the Amihan season. Keeping the body at proper warmth and overall healthy is advised.
